Description

A drum buss that hits hard but never quite gels. A mix that sounds loud without sounding together. The gap between “punchy” and “cohesive” is where the SSL G-Series bus compressor has lived for forty years — and that’s exactly what Cytomic The Glue VST delivers.

Unlike plugins that model general compressor behaviour, The Glue is a component-level recreation of the SSL 4000 G-Series bus compressor. Cytomic modelled every transistor, capacitor, and resistor in the original circuit. The result: a plugin that responds to programme material exactly as the hardware does — push the threshold 2 dB and the compression stays musical; push it 10 dB and the character shifts noticeably, with the release stretching and harmonics changing in response.

How Cytomic The Glue VST Differs from Other Compressors

Component-Level Circuit Modelling

Most SSL-style compressor plugins approximate the overall curve. The Glue simulates the actual VCA gain cell, timing capacitors, and transformer-coupled output stage in real time. This matters because the original hardware’s behaviour changes depending on how hard you drive it — and The Glue reproduces that shift accurately.

It also ships with two distinct voicings. “Old” mode models the original 1980s G-Series circuit with its softer knee and slower release — ideal for gentle mix buss work. “New” mode is based on the revised 1990s version with tighter response and more aggressive compression. Both are equally usable; the choice depends on your material.

HPF Sidechain — Stop the Pumping

When compressing a full mix or drum buss, low frequencies — especially kick drums and 808s — trigger the compressor harder than everything else. That’s what causes the classic “pumping” sound. The Glue’s high-pass filter on the sidechain circuit routes those low frequencies out of the detector. Set it to 60 Hz, 90 Hz, or 150 Hz, and the compressor ignores kick energy while still reacting to midrange and high-frequency content. You get glue without the rhythmic breathing.

Mix Control & Clip Mode

The Mix knob gives you parallel compression without routing through aux tracks — blend compressed and dry signals on the same insert. Clip mode adds hard-clipping saturation at the output stage, adding harmonic presence and perceived loudness when used subtly. On drum busses particularly, it adds body without the harshness of heavy limiting.

Where Cytomic The Glue VST Fits

Mix Buss

Insert The Glue as the first plugin on your master buss. Use a 2:1 ratio with threshold hitting 2–4 dB of gain reduction, attack at 30 ms, and release on Auto. Engage the HPF sidechain at 60 Hz to keep the low end solid. The mix tightens without sounding squashed.

Drum Buss

Set the ratio to 4:1 with a 10 ms attack, 0.1 ms manual release, and HPF at 90 Hz. The faster attack catches transient peaks while the manual release prevents kick-pumping. Use the Mix knob to blend 30–50% wet for natural parallel compression. For more processing options, check our VST plugins collection.

Subgroups

Dial in 2:1 with slow attack (30 ms) and Auto release on background vocals, synth stacks, or guitar layers. The compressor catches level inconsistencies without drawing attention to itself, and your subgroups sum cleaner before hitting the master buss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What DAWs work with The Glue?
A: The Glue supports VST3, AU, and AAX formats. It works in Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, Cubase, Studio One, Pro Tools, Reaper, Bitwig, Nuendo, and any 64-bit DAW that accepts these formats.

Q: Does it run natively on Apple Silicon?
A: Yes, natively on M1, M2, M3, and M4 without Rosetta. Intel Macs with macOS 10.12+ and Windows 10+ (64-bit) are also fully supported.

Q: Do I need an iLok or dongle?
A: No. The Glue uses machine-based authorization. Your serial key arrives via email, and you activate directly in the plugin. No iLok, no dongle, no cloud activation. You get 3 simultaneous activations.

Q: Is this a full license?
A: Yes — full, official Cytomic license, not a demo or trial. All features included with no limitations, audio muting, or time restrictions.

Q: What’s the difference between Old and New mode?
A: Old mode models the original 1980s G-Series circuit with a softer knee and slower release — ideal for gentle mix buss compression. New mode is based on the revised 1990s version with tighter response, faster release, and more aggressive compression.

Q: Can I use it on commercial releases?
A: Absolutely, 100% royalty-free. Use it on streaming platforms, sync licensing, YouTube, client projects, or personal work. No additional fees or reporting required.

Why Cytomic The Glue VST Earns Its Place

Stock compressors can glue a mix — plenty of engineers get decent results that way. But the SSL G-Series bus compressor earned its forty-year reputation because the VCA gain cell, timing network, and output transformer work as one unified system, not as separate processes. The Glue brings that exact interaction into your DAW with component-level DSP. The HPF sidechain and mix control add flexibility the original hardware never had, making it usable on everything from dense rock mixes to sparse electronic arrangements.
